Beholds Spirit Film of 1955
The Night of the Hunter
A thriller/horror film about a “Reverend” who goes after a widow, trying to get here late husband’s money. It would work, except for her young son, who sees through the preacher’s intentions. The film is shot like a child’s dream, or nightmare, and it is the presence of the children that heightens the stakes. It is also the performance of young Billy Chapin that brings the humanity and hope to a beautiful but otherwise terrifying film.

All That Heaven Allows

A romance between an older widow and her younger gardener. The reactions of her family and the fellow townspeople to their romance reveals a great deal about human character and social conformity in the 1950s (and now for that matter).
East of Eden

A parable of the Cain and Abel about two brothers competing for their father’s affections and for the affections of a pretty young woman. Set in World War I California, the farming family faces farming losses that the brothers must try to recover. The film is a study in truth, hiding from the truth and facing it.
Good Morning, Miss Dove

A celebration of the impact a small-town teacher has had on a variety of her students from all walks of life.
Marty

A lonely butcher lives with his mother, then falls in love with a teacher. His family disapproves of the match, and he must struggle between his chance for love/happiness and the support of his family.
The Trouble With Harry

A body is discovered in a small town, and many of the residents seem to have had something to do with his death. It is farcical study of human character, with death and a dead body as the center. Part of a group of films form the mid 50s that experiment with non-realistic storytelling, it is a brilliant use of comedy as a way to uncover character.
