Iconic scenes, layers of symbolism and beautiful cinematography all around, but I think so many people are drawn to this film because they can see their own quest for a happy life in Marcello’s.

The Apartment is a study in contemporary loneliness. Identity and success are tied to work, and the expectation of loyalty to the job can be at odds with the human being who is the worker. The sadness and loneliness of the situations do not stop the film from feeling uplifting and saying there is a way out of the modern predicament.
Inherit the Wind
A film full of interesting, complex characters. Inherit the Wind follows the trial of evolution versus creationism (and what can be taught in public schools). This film questions the hold that fundamentalism has on American society, and whether or not that is a good thing for us.
Shoot the Piano Player (Tirez sur le pianiste)
A crazy film about a mild mannered piano player at a bar who somehow happens to get involved with gangsters while falling in love. This is a mixture of all the elements of the purely entertaining movies of the past, blended together in a fun and quirky way.
Sons and Lovers
The sensitive young man from a mining town who desperately wants to become an artist, despite his alcoholic father and dependent mother.
Visit to a Small Planet
An inept, wacky alien (played by Jerry Lewis) rebelliously comes to earth and causes a lot of trouble. Aliens are often depicted as being far more advanced than we are, but this film suggests what if they are as crazy messed up as we are?
