Community is a child of the the Universal themes series and is part of the Big ideas theme group. This is a theme overview post.

A community is a group of like-minded individuals, things or ideas. A common trait unites the members, even though they may be diverse in many other ways.

  • Communication is the key to teamwork and building community.
  • Everyone excluded by a community weakens its strength.
  • The exchange of ideas requires mutual respect and the consideration of differences.
  • A useful member of a group considers the others before acting.
  • Taking time to be alone benefits you and the others in your life.

Community key concepts

  • Autonomy is the state of being self-governing. In control of oneself.
  • Belonging is being a part of something. Having a place that a person, idea or object fits in and is accepted.
  • Cooperation is the act of working together for a common purpose. The work is beneficial to all parties involved.
  • Fellowship is companionship, a friendly association and sharing of an experience. People who have come together over a shared interest or cause.
  • Fidelity is a faithful devotion to an obligation made. An accurate description or reproduction of something.
  • Loneliness is a feeling of unhappiness at being alone. Feeling apart from others, with an acute sense that you are not alike or aligned with others.
  • Whoever and whatever is defined as different or excluded from an established group becomes the other. The difference is highlighted and used to separate someone in a negative way.
  • A society is a group of people forming a distinct community that have identified common traits or goals.
  • Solitude is being alone and isolated, separated from human contact. It can feel lonely or refreshing dependent on state of mind.
  • Teamwork is joint action by a group of people, where individual achievements are placed secondary to the group’s goals.
