friendship

Friendship is: sympathy, favored, helper, patron, supporter, goodwill, intimacy, special, connection, built.

Ideally, friendship should bring joy and enrichment to both parties. Friendship is the sharing of dreams, of all of life’s experiences.

To a Friend, 1994

For my friend I could be my utmost self. I could travel the earth, come out of my insulated cocoon to dance in a ballet or sing in front of millions or paint a portrait of the universe, oil on canvas. I could cook with assorted cheeses to create the perfect dish, not sparing on the butter, cream, maybe a little sprig of dill for good measure.

I could state my opinions honestly and openly, and trust that the same would be returned,

I could change a flat tire and welcome your newest friend with open arms.

I could stop and listen when you need to talk, and not shut up when you need to hear.

I could let the past help me to become a better person, and mostly a better friend.

Massages, cookies, hot tea, a shoulder to cry on, a buddy to laugh with, a person to clean up messes (or help make a few).

I could be gently and clever, witty and flexible. When I inevitably fall down or fall short, I would still remain loyal. I won’t leave my friend.

All of this I would do if you promise to live your life to its fullest possibilities: be with the people you want to be with, take the chances you’ve always dreamed about. I know you dream of saving the poor, the deceived, the lonely. Rejoice in your passions, reap pleasure from life.

Don’t get stuck on a single flavor, be it vanilla or mocha almond cherry, because your soul is so large and so capable of infinite good. Become a writer. Live as though you were the greatest vocalist that ever lived. Allow yourself to make a difference, to aid justice wherever it be, a South American jungle or at a fancy shopping mall. See the world, change the world, or just be a part of the world, and I will be there to share.

Life and death, joy and pain, love and war, fire and ice: live always on the edge so you will feel and experience.,

Do it– if you don’t have the confidence in yourself– it’s okay, do it anyway, because I am confident in you. I have faith in you.

Sometimes it is difficult to stand and watch your life from afar, but I am always here when you want or need me. Each individual must go his or her own way, follow his or her own path. This is important because we are needed to help others. Real friendship is stronger than romance or physical passion, for we have shared so many of life’s emotions. Friendship is our gift to one another as we travel through our destined journeys.
